Historically, in Kashmir, Bandipora is famous for three As. First A stands for knowledge, second A stands for Adab (good habits or literature) and third A stands for Aab (water). The district is named due to its geographical location. It is bounded by mountains from the three of the sides and by Wullar Lake from the fourth side.

Ahmadullah Affandi was born on 22nd February, 1922 in Bandipora. He is also called as ‘Baba-e-J&K Scouting’. He won National award for scouting. In 1999, He was awarded by the Bharat Scouts and Guides Silver Elephant National Award in 1999 and state award in 2005-06 for his contribution. He also served as the leader of Indian contingent and as a Government teacher. He was the goal keeper for 11 football teams in Kashmir.

Geographically, the district has a total 4,042 sq km. area and occupies the rank 3rd in State and 302nd in India on the bases of this size. It lies at 34°42'N latitude, 74°65'E longitude and 2652 m altitude. In the year of 2021, there was a total 21.87% forest area of total geographical area. It is surrounded by Kashmir Region in the North, Ganderbal district in the South, Kargil district in the East, Kupwara district in the North West and Baramulla district in the South West. The district is located on the bank of the famous Wular Lake. The climate of the district remains pleasant almost throughout the year. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 549.5 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 3 sub-districts namely Bandipora, Sumbal Sonawari and Gurez. Moreover, it has 3 towns and 119 villages. Urdu is its official language. The district came into existence in year 2007 with an allotted district code of 09. Bandipora is the head quarter of the district which is located at the distance of 65 kms from the state capital.

Demographically, according to the 2011 census, the district has a total 56,794 numbers of households with the population of 3,92,232 comprising 2,07,680 are males and 1,84,552 are females and is leading it to the rank 14th in the state and 559th in India. It has population density of 1,137 (persons as per sq km.). The sex ratio of the region is considered as 889 (females as per 1000 males) males and child ratio is 892 (females as per 1000 males). According to 2011 census the principal languages in the district are Kashmiri at 82.39% and Hindi at 12.10%. During the year 2001-2011, the population growth rate of the district was 23.95% including 24.39% were males and 23.46% were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Muslim with 97.39% of the total population. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 1,137 out of which 625 were males and 512 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 864 out of which 546 were males and 318 were females.

Economically, agriculture is the main source of the income for the people of the district. Small scale industries are also available here. Tourism is also a big industry here.

Education wise, according to the 2011 census, the literacy rate in the district is 56.28% including 66.88% are males and 44.34% are females. The total literate population is 1,85,979 comprising 1,17,058 are males and 68,921 are females. The name some of the famous educational institutes are Alnoor College of Education, Standard Education Institute School, Modern Education Institute, Bada Payam-Ud- Din College of Education, harmukh College of Education, Mahboob-Ul-Alam College of Education, Sheikh Hamza College of Education, Wullar Valley College of Education, etc.

The district has many historical and religious tourist places to visit. These places are Wular Lake, Manasbal Lake, Nishat Park, Wular Vintage Park, Zanalankh Island, Danishwar (Chota Amarnath), Darul-Uloom-Rahimiyah. Wular Lake is one of the largest fresh water lakes of Asia which is located nearby the district. Manasbal Lake is famous as the deepest lake in the valley. It is said to be formed with Lake Manasarovar. It is surrounded by three villages Jarokbal, Kondabal and Ganderbal. Mughal Garden, built by Nurjaha, ia located nearby it. Various birds of different species can be seen here. Wular Vantage Park is located on Wullar Lake. It has beautiful scenic view. Darul-Uloom-Rahimiyah Darul-Uloom-Rahimiya is the famous madrasa. It is India’s second largest Madarsa. Danishwar (Chota Amarnath) is the sacred places of Hindus. It is a cave with the Linga of the Lord Shiva inside. Amar Nath Yatra is organized for this place. Nishat garden Bandipora is constructed in accordance of the Nishat Garden of Srinagar. It has beautiful flowers and trees. Visitors feel relaxed here.
